Questions About At-Home Pet Euthanasia

This is one of the most difficult decisions pet owners face. Look for signs that your pet's quality of life has significantly declined, such as inability to move comfortably, loss of interest in favorite activities, inability to control bodily functions, or chronic pain that can't be managed. Dr. O'Leary offers free quality of life consultations to help you make this difficult decision.

Dr. O'Leary will arrive at your home at the scheduled time and discuss the process with you. You'll have time to ask questions and spend final moments with your pet. When you're ready, she'll administer a sedative to help your pet relax into unconsciousness, followed by the euthanasia solution. The process is gentle, painless, and peaceful, allowing your pet to pass in the comfort of familiar surroundings with loved ones present.

Yes, other pets can be present if you wish. Some pets benefit from seeing their companion's body afterward, as it helps them understand what happened rather than wondering why their friend disappeared. However, this is entirely your choice based on what you feel is best for your pets.

Choose a comfortable, quiet space where your pet feels at ease. Consider having soft blankets or a pet bed available. Prepare family members, especially children, by explaining what will happen in age-appropriate terms. Consider who should be present, and make the appropriate arrangements. Dr. O'Leary will guide you through this process with compassion and support.

Forever Friends Vet is not a crematory, but Dr. O'Leary arranges both communal and private cremation through our trusted partner crematory. With communal cremation, your pet is cremated with other pets and the ashes are not returned. With private cremation, your pet is cremated individually, and the ashes are returned to you in an urn or container of your choice. We can discuss memorial options such as pawprints, fur clippings, or other keepsakes to remember your beloved pet.

The euthanasia process is designed to be completely painless. Your pet will first receive a sedative to help them relax and become sleepy. Once they're comfortable and sedated, the euthanasia solution is administered. This deepens the sedative until they gently pass away. Dr. O'Leary monitors the entire process to ensure your pet remains comfortable throughout.

Grief after losing a pet is natural and varies from person to person. We provide resources for pet loss support groups, counseling services, and reading materials. Remember that it's okay to grieve and take time to heal. Creating memorials, rituals, or ways to honor your pet's memory can be helpful in the healing process.

While we try to accommodate emergency situations when possible, it's best to call as soon as you anticipate needing our services. For planned euthanasia, 24-48 hours notice is helpful, but we understand that circumstances can change quickly with an ill pet. Dr. O'Leary does not charge for changed or cancelled appointments. Contact us to discuss your specific situation and timing needs.
